There’s Something Special About the Special-Edition Volkswagen Golf R
It wasn’t that long ago we disclosed Volkswagen’s homage to the 20th anniversary of the Golf R. To commemorate the birth of the Golf R, VW debuted the Golf R “20 Years.” Inside the 20 Year package are several mechanical refinements that prove the sporty hot hatch ages backward in performance with each new model year. In fact, the special edition VW Golf R enhanced the hatchback’s lap time around the prominent Nürburgring-Nordschleife racetrack by four seconds. The 20 Year hatchback completed the lap in 7:47.31 minutes. Moreover, the Touring Race Car and Volkswagen Golf R development driver Benjamin Leuchter set the lap time.
The 20-Year Volkswagen Golf R reveals a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The four-cylinder engine is the same powertrain found inside the 2022 Volkswagen Golf R. However, the Golf R 20 Year earns a boost in power output with 328 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. In contrast, the standard Golf R generates 315 horsepower. The added power boost for the 20-Year hatchbacks acceleration time rises from 0-60 mph in 4.6 seconds, unlike the 22’ Golf R’s output of 4.7 seconds. Furthermore, the VW Golf R 20 Years retains a top speed of 170 mph.
Inside the 20-Year Golf R is the same seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission with a hint of intensity. In addition to the improved clutch, the exhaust system also adopted some refinements. As a result, the German automaker ensures that the engine’s reaction time has improved. Moreover, the special edition Golf R includes all-wheel drive, which offers some assistance with traction braking.
The Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years includes the Driving Dynamics Manager, R-Performance Package, and R-Performance Torque Vectoring. Other improvements exclusive to the 20-Year Golf R are two new driving modes: Special and Drift. In addition to the new drive modes, the Golf R’s standard drive modes include Race, Comfort, and Sport. There’s also a customizable drive mode ready to accommodate any enthusiast’s driving preferences perfectly. The Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years positions the suspension into a softer setting, allowing the engine to perform at its peak level. Benjamin Leuchter utilized the customizable drive mode during his Nürburgring-Nordschleife laps.
