Volkswagen has significantly enhanced its in-car voice assistant, making it more interactive and conversational with the help of ChatGPT. This upgrade initially premiered at CES and is now available across various VW models, including the latest Jettas and electric vehicles.

Rather than a complete overhaul of the infotainment system, ChatGPT is an enhancement of VW’s existing voice assistant, Ida, through a collaboration with Cerence, a longtime partner in voice AI. Using the Cerence Chat Pro platform, VW’s voice assistant goes beyond standard commands like navigation and climate control. With OpenAI’s technology, drivers can receive local entertainment recommendations or even engage in a spontaneous trivia game.

The improved voice assistant provides a more natural and intuitive user experience. Depending on the vehicle, users can activate it by saying “Hello IDA” or “Hello Volkswagen.” If Ida cannot answer directly, it connects to the cloud, where Cerence Chat Pro uses multiple databases and sources, including ChatGPT, to provide the needed information. Cerence CEO Stefan Ortmanns expressed pride in the collaboration, highlighting that these new capabilities make the voice assistant more knowledgeable, capable, and enjoyable, enhancing safety and driving experience.

Volkswagen also prioritizes data privacy, assuring users that the AI does not access sensitive vehicle data and that session data is deleted immediately after each use. For most 2025 Volkswagen models, the new voice assistant will be available as a free trial, while others may require a subscription to VW’s Plus Speech with AI, part of the Car-Net system.

Voice assistants have become a standard feature in modern vehicles, but Volkswagen sees the integration of ChatGPT as a major advantage. The advanced conversational abilities may appeal to those seeking an AI to engage in natural, meaningful dialogue while driving. Although other automakers like Mercedes-Benz are also experimenting with ChatGPT, VW’s early adoption could give it a competitive edge in attracting new buyers.

Kai Grünitz, a Volkswagen Brand Board of Management member, emphasized the brand’s commitment to making advanced technologies widely accessible. “By integrating ChatGPT into our voice assistant, we’re offering drivers the opportunity to use artificial intelligence daily, highlighting the innovative nature of our products,” Grünitz stated.
