The VW Group of America Recently Opened a New Hub Located in Texas

Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA) announced the grand opening of its port facility in Port Freeport, Texas. This new Gulf Coast hub represents an approximate $114 million investment in the Freeport area through indirect employment in the trucking, rail, and vessel operations sectors, in addition to the creation of more than 110 new direct jobs.
“Opening this new port facility in Freeport helps create a more resilient and more sustainable supply chain for many years to come,” said Anu Goel, Executive Vice President, Group After Sales & Services, VWGoA. “Additionally, Freeport’s easier access to rail and trucking will make our logistics operations more streamlined and efficient.”
Approximately 300 dealers in the Central and Western parts of the United States receive vehicles from Port Freeport, which processes up to 140,000 Volkswagen, Audi, Bentley, Lamborghini, and Porsche imports. The Volkswagen Assembly Plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee; the ports in Baltimore, Maryland; Benicia, California; Davisville, Rhode Island; Jacksonville, Florida; San Diego, California; and two smaller facilities in Houston and Midlothian, Texas, which were merged to form the new Freeport location, are among the seven ports that VWGoA currently operates in the United States. Port Freeport’s wider channel allows Volkswagen Group of America to use larger liquified natural gas (LNG) boats, which furthers the company’s sustainability goals.
KDC and PRP worked with VWGoA and Port Freeport to build the site. To further bolster the local labor pool, VWGoA and Brazosport College, located in nearby Lake Jackson, have partnered to introduce a new accredited curriculum in logistics with an emphasis on Vehicle Logistics operations. The creation of programs like these in collaboration with regional partners will support future employment opportunities connected to transportation, storage, and distribution in Brazoria County and at Port Freeport.
