Rivian Scores $5 Billion Investment from Volkswagen: What This Means for Scout Motors

Rivian made headlines with some piping hot tea. Rivian announced a $5 billion investment from Volkswagen. The Volkswagen Rivian partnership will see the two companies collaborate on software development for electric vehicles, starting with an immediate $1 billion infusion from the German automaker, followed by an additional $4 billion in the future. This significant investment raises a pressing question: What does this mean for Scout Motors?
The connection between Scout Motors and Rivian is intriguing. Both are working on electric pickup trucks and SUVs, though Rivian already has its R1T and R1S models on the market, while Scout is still in the development phase.
Despite the similarities, Christopher Hauss, VW’s Head of Strategy and Finance Communications, assures that Scout’s progress remains unaffected. “Our commitment to Scout remains unchanged,” he stated. “Our primary focus now is advancing our joint venture with Rivian.” For context, Volkswagen announced in May 2022 that it would resurrect the Scout brand as an electric vehicle maker, with plans to build both an SUV and a truck at a new plant in South Carolina. Magna Steyr is assisting Scout in creating a unique platform separate from VW’s MEB architecture.
Rivian’s technology won’t directly influence Scout’s development, but the parallels between the two companies are hard to ignore. Both are relatively new to the EV market—the R1T launched in late 2021, and Scout is yet to reveal a prototype. Both offer pickup and SUVs and have secured substantial funding from Volkswagen. The VW-Rivian partnership aims to accelerate the production of Rivian’s upcoming mass-market models, the R2 and R3. At the same time, VW hopes to leverage Rivian’s expertise in software and electrical systems, which the German automaker has faced challenges with. Information will continue to grow from the resurrection of Scout Motors, but these considerations likely influenced VW’s investment in Rivian.
VW Group CEO Oliver Blume highlighted the partnership’s benefits “Our collaboration will enable us to deliver top-notch solutions more quickly and cost-effectively. We are committed to enhancing our strong brands with innovative and iconic products.”
