New Volkswagen ID.Models Support BiDirectional Charging

Volkswagen’s ID.Family now offers bidirectional charging with the “Vehicle to Home” function. Customers can use a home power station and the integrated Home Energy Management System (HEMS) from Volkswagen partner HagerEnergy GmbH to cover their household consumption with their photovoltaic system. The German automaker and HagerEnergy GmbH have launched a pilot project in Sweden where an entire housing estate will receive electric vehicles and the corresponding charging infrastructure.
“We are actively shaping the energy transition with products and services centered around the electric car: With the bidirectional charging function that is now available, we have tailored a new service offering to the needs of our customers. Not only can they save energy costs, but they are also making an important contribution to the sustainable use of energy.”
-Imelda Labbé, Volkswagen Board Member for Sales, Marketing and After Sales
The bidirectional charging function is available with Volkswagen’s ID.Family, such as the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, ID.Buzz, and ID.2all. The growing family will revolutionize the way we use electric cars in the future. With the 77 kWh battery (net) capacity, ID.models can store electricity at home via the bidirectional charging function. Even vehicles that enthusiasts already have can benefit from this function as soon as they receive the ID.Software 3.5 update. VW customers can use the self-generated electricity stored in the vehicle battery to power their homes over several cloudy days or in the evening when the photovoltaic system no longer supplies electricity. With this service, customers can save energy costs and contribute to sustainable energy use.
It’s enchanting to witness technology being utilized to optimize energy usage and promote renewable energy sources. Electric cars can stabilize the power grid and distribute excess energy where required. Additionally, with innovative electricity tariffs and algorithms, it’s possible to charge the EV precisely when there is a lot of renewable energy available. For instance, wind turbines do not have to be powered off because there are no consumers. Electric cars can also feed electricity they do not need into the customer’s home grid (vehicle-to-home) and provide power to stabilize the electricity grid in the future.
Residents of the Stenberg housing estate in Hudiksvall, Sweden, are already benefiting from new technology. The farm, which has been around for 350 years, has been remodeled to serve as the basis for the new settlement. Klas Boman, a Swedish entrepreneur, aims to make the houses future-proof and sustainable for another 350 years by remodeling them. Volkswagen joined the project in April 2021, and Boman says this will be one of the most significant changes in the energy market.
